Week after week we participate in the Lord’s Table.
The symbols, reminding us of the Lamb, bring heaven close to our hearts. The elements we hold in our hands remind us of Jesus and what the atonement—the prayashchith (propitiation) of the sinless Son of Man on our behalf before a holy God—achieved for us.
We will participate in this “feast” Lords day by Lord’s day till He comes.
Can you hear the palpable yearning in these words?
Too soon we rise, the symbols disappear;
the feast, though not the love, is past and done;
gone are the bread and wine, but Thou art here,
nearer than ever, still my Shield and Sun.
Feast after feast thus comes, and passes by;
yet passing, points to the glad feast above;
giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy,
the Lamb’s great bridal feast of bliss and love.
