Dear Young People,
One day, when I was commuting to work, I asked my non Christian friends the question, “Why do you think people marry?” Here are some good answers that they gave me.
- Because society expects it as the normal thing to do
- For companionship
- To care for someone and have someone care for you
- To keep people from temptation by satisfying the sexual urge
- To have children
- Because it has been destined by God Almighty
Let’s see what the Bible has to say about some of these things. Please fill in the blanks by looking into your Bible.
Companionship
God did not want Adam to be lonely. He created Eve as a companion and helper for Adam.
Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, “It is not good that _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
In marriage, two people from different families come together and must learn to live together. That is one reason why one must be very careful when choosing a partner to marry. The Bible commands believing men and women to marry believers. For us who have pledged to love the Lord Jesus with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength, it will be very difficult to find fulfilling companionship if the spouse is an unbeliever.
2 Cor 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with ____________. For what ____________ has righteousness with lawlessness? And what ___________ has light with darkness?
Once the marriage is over, the husband and wife must be true to one another and live together as companions. In Malachi, we read a verse that shows God’s anger against men who were unfaithful to their wives.
Mal 2:14 . . . Because the LORD has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously; yet she is your ___________ and your wife by covenant.
Having Children (procreation)
Having children is an important purpose of marriage.
Gen 1:28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply . . .”
Not only does God want children to be born to godly parents, He also wants godly parents to raise godly children.
Mal 2:15 . . . He seeks godly ____________. . . .
Paul wrote to Timothy about the qualities that a bishop should have. He sets a high standard for bishops. Now, these q ualities are excellent qualities that all men should aim for. One of the qualities he lists is that the Bishop should have godly children.
1 Tim 3:4 one who rules his own house well, having his ___________ in submission with all reverence
We find several verses in Ephesians 6 and Colossians 3 that deal with the subject of parents and children in a godly home.
Sexual Fulfillment
In the marriage, sex is pure and proper. There is nothing sinful about it at all.
Heb 13:4 Marriage is _____________ among all, and the bed undefiled;but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
1 Cor 7:3-4 Let the _____________ render to his _____________ the affection due her, and likewise also the _____________ to her _____________ . The _____________ does not have authority over her own body, but the _____________ does. And likewise the _____________ does not have authority over his own body, but the _____________ does.
